We also track something we call completion probability, which is our estimate of the odds a member finishes out their current term rather than leaving office early for any reason. HOW WE CALCULATE THIS

The age gap itself is simple arithmetic: we take the oldest currently serving member's age and subtract the youngest currently serving member's age. Right now that's Grassley at 92 and Frost at 29, for a gap of 63 years, no rounding, no estimating. Completion probability is a little more involved. It's our estimate of the likelihood that a given member serves out the remainder of their current term, based on relevant factors including age. We don't guess at this number or pull it from a gut feeling, and we don't speculate about anyone's health or make predictions about elections. It's computed the same way for every single member of Congress, on the same schedule, using the same live dataset, so the 7% attached to Grassley's name and the 99% attached to Frost's name are directly comparable to each other and to every other member's number on the site. We're simply doing consistent math on age and term completion across the whole Congress, so patterns show up instead of getting buried in anecdotes.
